Content is available to: This is a setting that can be edited within every content item. Options include Site Administrators, Members Only and Everyone. Making a content item available to Site Administrators will allow only members with administrative rights to see that content item. This is handy when collaborating with other site admins on a new section before it "goes live." Members Only restricts access to members of IAAP. This setting does NOT restrict access to just members of your chapter. The Everyone setting opens the content item up to anybody that visits your site, whether they are affiliated with IAAP or not. Content item: Within each page folder are content items which make up the content on a page. A page may contain one content item or it may contain as many as 10 or more, depending on how much information you have on the page. By having multiple content items on a single page, it makes it easy to manipulate the page layout. Child folder: Any folder added within a page folder. A child folder will be created as a new page within that section of your site. For example, if you add a child folder to your About Us folder, the child folder will be a new page within your About Us page folder and will be listed as a dropdown menu link in your main navigation. Also, when you access your main About Us page, you will see the child listed as a left-hand navigation link. Community URL: Every chapter and division site has its own unique community URL that identifies each site within the Web Community. This URL is in addition to any top-level domain your chapter may be using. For example, the Big City Chapter's community URL would look like this: http://community.iaap-hq.org/IAAPHQ/BigCity. While your site is accessible using this address, the top-level domain (see term below) is what you will most likely use to promote your site. Document Manager: Allows sitebuilders to upload and link directly to documents without worrying about restrictions. Documents uploaded here can NOT be restricted to only members of a chapter, but they can be restricted to IAAP members if the page is using that content availability setting. For full details on the document manager and resource libraries, see the Working With Documents tutorial. Image Manager: Similar to the Document Manager, the image manager allows sitebuilders to upload images within a content item. For complete details, see the Working With Images tutorial. Navigation controls: Page folders and content items can be created and/or edited within the navigation controls. You can also change any and all navigation links within your main menu and dropdown menus. You can reach this section from your site dashboard by clicking on the "Create/Modify Site Content" link. The navigation controls are broken into two parts. The left column displays your page folders and the right column displays the content items within each folder. Page folder: Each page of your website is organized into folders that can be accessed from the navigation controls. For example, your site's home page is located in a folder called "Home." Each folder also represents a navigation link on your site. So each navigation link for your site (Home, About Us, Meetings & Events, etc.) has its own folder within the Navigation controls. Resource library: A place to upload documents (newsletters, rosters, meeting minutes, etc.) that can be restricted to members of just your chapter. The resource library is usually named "Professional Resources" or "Resources" and can be found along the main navigation links of your site. Site dashboard: The site dashboard allows you to access all areas of the CMS, including site settings, navigation controls, web traffic reports and a preview link. For a complete summary, check out the Site Dashboard Overview. Site list: The site list will show you a list of every chapter or division site that you have administrative access to. When logged into the Web Community, you can access this list with this URL: http://community.iaap-hq.org/HigherLogic/Microsites/SiteList.aspx. Top-level domain: A top-level domain is the main web address for your site. For example, the Big City Chapter's top-level domain might be something like www.iaap-bigcity.org. Type of content: A setting that can be changed when editing a content item. By default, HTML is the standard type of content and 9 times out of 10 is the type you will need to use. Other settings advanced users might use are Hyperlink, User Control or Syndicated Content. The Uploaded File type is also available but we do not recommend using it for anything, as there are better options available for uploading files. User controls: A type of content that can automatically pull information like recent blogs, announcements, allowing sections of your site to be more interactive by allowing users to contribute some of their own content. Using user controls is an advanced sitebuilder technique that should not be used until you are very comfortable creating new pages and content items. WYSIWYG: This is the editing section that looks similar to a word processing program like Word. WYSIWYG (pronounced "wizzy-wig") stands for "What You See Is What You Get." A WYSIWYG is the area where you actually enter the content of a content item. It is the box where you format your content, using the editing ribbon that includes icons for bold, italic, alignment, links, images, etc. It is similar to a word processor. A WYSIWYG helps automatically convert your content into HTML without actually coding it yourself. You may see WYSIWYG and "page editor" used interchangeably through this guide. |
